Culturally, the Heritage Community, formerly Core, which is bound by Broad Street, College Avenue, Winnipeg Street, the CPR Mainline, and includes the area known as the "Arcola Triangle"-- Winnipeg Street, Arcola Avenue to Victoria Avenue, contributes significantly to Regina's heritage. It is after all one of the city's oldest communities.

The Heritage Community Association, is looking to celebrate the community's pride in its past and encourage positive recognition of its future potential by archiving the history of those who lived here or were part of the prominent business community. If you or your family members are an "alumni" of Heritage, we want to hear from you! However, there will not be a party. Funds that would have gone to party horns, confetti, a champagne banquet and a band will instead be used to make new beginnings for the children in Heritage. So, please don't buy a new outfit, or hire a babysitter. Stay at home and feel wonderful about the new year by making a donation to the "It's time to play!" project of the Heritage Community Association.

Food Bank Christmas Hamper Information

From the offices of the Regina & District Food Bank:
Customers will be able to register for a Christmas hamper and toys starting on November 17, 2010 and up until December 17, 2010.
All clients must register in person at the Food Bank.

-bring all hospitalization cards for everyone listed on the the order as well as proof of their curren address by way of SaskEnergy receipts or a cheque stub.
-choose to register with the Food Bank OR the Salvation Army, not both.
-hampers from the Food Bank will be assigned for pick up on either December 22nd or December 23rd.

Offices will be closed on November 26th, December 24, 27 and January 3, 2011.

Sundry items that come to mind--

-This weekend is the annual Food Bank drive. I'll be at the Southland Mall Safeway tonight selling hampers to help "stuff the bus." Come on by!

-Don't forget to support the annual campaign of the United Way of Regina. Many workplaces have events going on now to raise funds; please give generously. Your support helps the Heritage Community!

-And on to something completely different, because it is the "haunting time of year":

Witch's Brew Pasta Salad:

3 types of pasta noodles
black olives
cherry tomatoes
diced green and yellow peppers
broccoli florets
sliced carrots
sliced zucchini
chunks of pepperoni
crumbled feta cheese
raisins and pistachios (to your taste)
Italian salad dressing

Cook pasta accordingly.
Combine pasta with all other ingredients, add dressing and then chill.
For fun, serve it in a plastic Witch's Cauldron.

While it has only just turned to fall (although it certainly does feel more like summer), it is time to turn our thoughts to our spring event, Trek to Tomorrow 2011.
This scavenger hunt with an Amazing Race style twist was hugely successful this past May so we'd like to do it again but won't be able to without YOUR help!

Arm Chair Trek update

The first of our "Arm Chair Treks" took place yesterday at the Regina Senior Citizens Centre. Those in attendance were treated to photos of significant buildings in the community and commentary on stories from the past and present about this historical neighbourhood.
The next "Trek" takes place at the George Bothwell Library on October 6. Please contact the Regina Public Library directly for more information. If you are interested in hosting an Arm Chair Trek (a photo slideshow), then give us a call! Under the Harvest Moon Heritage Community Festival presented by Bank of America-

For as long as people have been planting and gathering food there has been some form of a Harvest Festival within different cultural groups around the world. Given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals can be found at various times. Harvest festivals typically feature feasting, both family and public, with foods that are drawn from crops that come to maturity around the time of the festival. China celebrates the Moon Festival between mid-September and mid-October, “Obzhynky” is the Ukrainian Harvest Festival, which happens in mid August, and Germany’s Oktoberfest is held on the first Sunday in October. Green Corn Festival or Ceremony is a Native American harvest celebration. Creek, Cherokee, Seminole, Yuchi, and Iroquois as well as other Native American tribes celebrate this ceremony. This ceremony is usually held when there is a full moon, which
meant the first corn crop was ready to harvest. The date was not able to be determined ahead of time; it was up to the corn.

The Under the Harvest Moon Heritage Community Festival presented by the Bank of America is an outdoor event centered around the community’s Art Park on 11th & Halifax. The focus of the Festival is celebrating cultures signicificant to Heritage and the interconnectedness of all to earth’s bounty. We invite everyone to come out and watch free performances and participate in free workshops throughout the day. There will be food vendors on site. We ask that everyone bring his or her own chairs or blankets to sit on while enjoying the day’s entertainment.
The Festival will kick off with a beet pickle canning workshop at the Heritage
Community Association’s office at 9:00 a.m. Please register for this workshop by September 20 by calling 757-9952 or emailing heritagecommunity@sasktel. net.

The Opening Ceremonies will include “Breaking Bread with our Neighbours.” Following the ceremonies, you can enjoy a warm bowl of “Stone Soup” while listening to the Mandolin Orchestra or interacting with one of the Queen City Caring Clowns.

The Chimatawa Dance Troupe will perform a traditional, fancy, jingle, grass dance, and hip hop. The Indian Métis Christian Fellowship Family Youth Program runs the Chimatawa Dance Troupe. They have a strong focus on respect for the Triune Creator and all the names of God, respect for other people’s needs and safety, respect themselves with decent language and clean behaviour, and respect for creation including Indian Métis Christian Fellowship property.

Fidji Gendron and Sarah Vinge will be doing a workshop in the Heritage Com-
munity Association office about Native Plant Gardening. Following the workshop, they will take the group on a tour of the Art Park which houses native species.

K.G. Harmonie German Dance group will perform Bavarian style dances. Local folk dances in Germany have followed the folk dancing pattern in most of Europe, vigorous rather than lyrical and generally based on circles or lines. The groups performing are the Little Sparklers, Junior Sparklers, Sparklers and Heart of the Harmonie.

Crystal Stewart from Twisted Creations will be making art pieces -twisting bal-
loons- at the Festival from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Through the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle tin can art project , children will create the tin can lanterns that will light the area for the closing ceremonies.

Ray Bell & Tahnis Cunningham, Heritage residents, recently featured on CBC Radio, will perform musical selections in the afternoon.

Dale Delainey, a resident of the community,will do a guided tour highlighting significant sights and stories of the past and present.Heritage is one of the oldest communities in Regina, with a rich history and colourful mosaic of cultures that define it.

The Kolos Ukrainian Dance Ensemble was developed to educate everyone about Ukrainian culture through dance and music. The Kolos Performing Ensemble is a talented and exuberant group of dancers. They are well known locally, provincially, nationally and internationally for their unique style and originality. The group has been an important member of the Regina cultural and arts community and has performed at hundreds of venues.

Adam Smith is a local artist from the Heritage Community, he will be playing guitar and rapping with a bit of beat boxing.

The City of Regina is hosting a composting workshop. Come out and learn more about this earth friendly practice and how you can start composting at your home or make use of the bins available in the Heritage Community.

A kid’s Mini Trek will start at the Heritage Community Association office; this event will have the same scavenger hunt format as the successful Trek to Tomorrow fundraiser put on by the Heritage Community Association in May. Prizes will be awarded to participants of the Mini Trek.

Join Jayne Clendening, a certified Laughter Yoga coach, for a session that will include laughter exercises to connect people of all ages and abilities. Not only does it improve self-esteem and communication skills, laughter improves heart health, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, aids in learning, and much more.

The New Dance Horizon Pelican Project is an ongoing series of creative workshops that explore the magic of art, nature and myth through sound, movement, text and visuals. The dancers will teach the audience hip-hop moves and end with a procession through the Art Park. This performance is geared towards youth but can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone!

Lee Maracle is a Native Canadian writer whose work is unparalleled in its creativity and scope. Through novels, poetry, drama, performance art and storytelling, she exposes and explores the experience of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Her work re-imagines centuries-old myth and tradition for future generations, and reflects her antipathy toward sexism, racism and white cultural domination.

T.A.L.ENT. (The Aboriginal Lounge Entertainment) highlights Aboriginal and local artists performing original acts in diverse art forms. Tessa Desnomie, Bill Cook, and John J Cook will give a musical performance at the Festival.

The Lion Dance is an ancient and integral part of the classic Kung Fu training, combining sport athleticism, music and traditional symbolism. All lions are auspicious, bringing good luck and blessings from heaven. Their special colour symbolisms include benevolence, courage, justice, compassion, good fortune, and so on, as well as point to their countenance and fortitude.

Terrence Littletent, a world champion hoop dancer, comes from Kawacatoose First Nation but is currently a resident of the Heritage Community. Terrence will be accompanied by dancers and drummers. Originally, the Hoop Dance was performed by medicine men and spiritual leaders as medicinal and/or visionary dances. Visions were seen through the hoops to cure ailments or see the future.

The Regina Plains Museum will be open 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. There are two exhibits on display. “Sitting Pretty” which is the history of the toilet from chamber pots to privies to sparkling porcelain. Visitors are encouraged to bring packaged toilet paper which will be donated to the Regina Food Bank to help “wipe out poverty”. They also have a permanent display that is relevant to the Heritage Community. Germantown is an exhibit that looks at the distinct working-class neighbourhood in Central Regina that emerged in the early 1900’s.

The Regina Public Library will have a puppet show at 2:00 pm. During the Chinese Moon Festival families get together to view the full moon, a symbol of luck, harmony and abundance. Adults will eat many different varieties of moon cakes with a good cup of piping hot Chinese tea. Along with the moon cakes, children have parades with lanterns and puppet shows. In this tradition, come out to Central Children’s Library as they host this special family friendly puppet show to celebrate the Under the Harvest Moon Festival.

The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS) will be open throughout the day for visitors. The SGS is a volunteer provincial heritage organization whose purpose is to promote and develop the study, research, and preservation of genealogy and family history.

Healthy & tasty summertime recipe

I don't know about you, but I like trying something new every now and then.
Here is a simple twist on an old standby; coleslaw.
Give it a try and let me know what you think...

1 (8 ounce) can pineapple tidbits
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 banana, sliced
3 cups shredded cabbage
1 cup celery, sliced diagonally
1 can madarin oranges
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup raisins
1 (8 ounce) container orange flavoured yogurt
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation-

Drain pineapple, reserving 2 tbsp juice. Place in a large bowl.
In a bowl, combine reserved pineapple juice and lemon juice. Toss with banana and add to pineapple. Add cabbage, celery, mandarin oranges, walnuts and raisins, toss to combine.
Blend yogurt and salt together, and add to cabbage mixture; toss lightly. Cover, and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.

She is also co-editor and contributor of “Telling It: Women and Language Across Culture” [conference proceedings] Polestar/Raincoast. Ms. Maracle is widely published in anthologies and scholarly journals worldwide. Ms. Maracle was born in North Vancouver and is a member of the Sto: Loh nation. Maracle is a mother of four and grandmother of seven. Maracle has served as the Distinguished Visiting Professor at both University of Toronto and Western Washington University. Ms. Maracle is an award winning author, an award winning instructor and a gifted orator. Upcoming works include: Memory Serves: and other speeches, Newest press, 2012, First Wives’ Club and other stories, Theytus Books 2010.

Ms. Maracle is currently teaching in the Aboriginal Studies program at the University of Toronto and the Centre of Indigenous Theatre.

In the summer of 2009, with residents having voted to change the community name from “Core” to “Heritage” and a new logo having been adopted, it was decided that it was time to market this “forgotten” community to all of Regina. Thus the first annual fundraising and awareness event “Trek to Tomorrow” and the accompanying Legacy Program, “Culture, Heritage & Urban Art” were born.

The Heritage Community Association was extremely excited with the prospect of growing citizenship in students of Regina and opening up their world to the multicultural, heritage rich community of Heritage through an educational, artistic experience~ “Culture, Heritage & Urban Art”. The Board, staff and organizing committee recognize the amount of effort that was put into this by the students and teachers with the quality of work that was submitted. The judges had a very difficult time in making a decision as all works championed the project goals in one way or another.

We look forward to the ceremonial launching of the photo exhibit at the Northgate Mall on June 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. to which you are all invited to attend.

At this time, we congratulate the winning grade 7 students from Dr. A. E. Perry School. The students will be presented with medals and the school will be receiving $500 to be used to develop citizenship and an inclusive school community. Congratulations Dr. A. E. Perry students!

Thank you again to all students and we look forward to your attendance at the Northgate Mall where all of the students’ photos will be exhibited for the first of many venue visits over the summer of 2010.

Busy times in the Heritage Community

On Saturday, May 1, 2010, 27 teams participated in the first annual Trek to Tomorrow, an awareness event for the Heritage Community. Despite the wind, snow and rain, everyone had a great afternoon that saw the Trekkers race through the neighbourhood to find locations based on clues. Everyone arrived back to the Regina Inn for an evening of food, entertainment and prizes. The banquet hall was filled to capacity; the crowd was delighted by FaDa Dance, a contemporary dance company housed in the Heritage neighbourhood. Former Mayor of Regina, Larry Schneider, shared stories of his childhood in the area, once known as "Germantown."
The volunteers cannot be thanked enough for sticking to their checkpoints along the route for over 2 hours in the cold weather of May Day.
The event was a groundbreaking endeavour for the community. Organizers hoped to put Heritage on the map in a positive way, and from all accounts, that goal was certainly accomplished. Heritage hopes to see even more teams out next year, with thoughts and schemes already in the works for Trek to Tomorrow 2.

Jane’s Walk is the street-level celebration of Jane Jacobs’ legacy that combines the simple act of walking with personal observations, urban history and local lore as a means of knitting people together into strong and resourceful communities. Over 10,000 people explored over 315 neighbourhoods across Canada and the United States last year – and it went global with one tour in Mumbai, India!

We are inviting you to lead a tour in an area where you live, work or play. It simply involves
planning a route, thinking through the stories, places and people you want to hear about and discuss, then walking participants through it – you decide what’s important. If you like, you could share the guiding duties with a few other resourceful friends or colleagues.

Jane's Walk aids in the socially desirable goal of getting people out of their cars and onto the sidewalks for the basic tasks of daily life, shopping, schools and work. Jane’s Walks are meant to be fun and participatory – everyone’s got a story and they’re usually keen to share it. All tours are given, and taken, for free. We help with the publicity, logistics and website management – you need to get the word out with your local networks and friends. We also have useful resources and ‘tips for tour guides’ available through our on-line forum that connects you with Jane’s Walks guides from around the world (will be launched on Jane’s Walk website by March 2010).

You don’t have to be familiar with Jane Jacobs’ work to lead a tour, but this is a great way to get familiarized with some basic ideas. In books such as “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” (1961) she championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning, made the case for refurbishing old buildings instead of tearing them down and building new ones, and demonstrated the desirability of increasing the density of cities instead of sprawling endlessly outward.

Jane’s Walk first happened in Toronto in 2007, and has since spread to a dozen other cities including New York, Ottawa, Calgary, Halifax, Guelph, Salt Lake City, Regina, Winnipeg, New Orleans, Montreal and Vancouver. POSTER CONTEST DETAILS
The primary purpose of the contest is to increase the awareness of children and youth of Regina for the importance of healthy eating.
The Theme of the Poster Contest is “Celebrate food…from field to table” a Dietitians of Canada initiative.
The contest is open to ages pre-school – 19 years.
All posters must be delivered to the REACH office (425 Winnipeg Street) no later than Noon on March 31, 2010 or post marked no later than March 30, 2010 (Box 4482, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 3W7).
Posters are to be 8 ½” X 11”.
The child’s name, age group and contact information is to be written on the back of the poster. (Note only the first name and age of the child will be published and or displayed)
All entries will become the property of REACH and will not be returned.
The winning posters artists will receive a basket of fresh fruit and vegetables and age related gifts.
The winning posters will also be displayed in a 2011 REACH calendar.

The decision of the Judges will be final. The work will judged on a points system based on the following criteria.
· Age groups; under 5years, 5-7years, 8 - 10 years, 11 & 12 years, 13& 14 years, 15 & 16 years and 17 - 19 years.
· Creativity and originality
· A positive nutrition message
· The ability to promote the principles of healthy eating within the nutrition month theme, “Celebrate food …..from field to table” a Dietitians of Canada initiative.

A lecture by University of Regina professor Bill Brennan will be held at the RCMP Heritage Centre on February 25th @ 7 pm. Admission is free but donations to the Heritage Centre will be appreciated.
This is a great opportunity to learn of the legacy of the On-to-Ottawa Trek and the Riots for the City of Regina and certainly the Heritage Community where the "Regina Riot" took place in 1935.

Info on the Poet Laureate Robert Currie

Robert Currie is a critically acclaimed and award-winning author of poetry, fiction, and radio plays whose work has appeared in numerous literary magazines and over 40 anthologies. He has published four poetry chapbooks, six books of poetry and three novels. His most recent book of poetry is Witness.
Currie is also an experienced instructor. He taught creative writing at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts at Fort San for four years, at the Sage Hill Writing Experience for three summers, and at Central Collegiate in Moose Jaw for 30 years (where he also taught English).
In addition to his writing and teaching, he has been a dedicated volunteer in the Saskatchewan writing community since 1969. Among his many other activities he co-founded Coteau Books (1975) and was a founding Board member for the Saskatchewan Fesitval of Words (1997); he still serves on both boards.
Currie became Saskatchewan’s third Poet Laureate in 2007. He was appointed to a second term which will run until December 31st, 2010.
Currie has lived his entire life in Saskatchewan.

Do you know of any newcomers to Canada who are interested in working in the Warehouse industry?

Regina Open Door Society’s Employment Connections program helps integrate newcomers with language and cultural barriers into the labour market. Through in-class instruction and volunteer work experience, participants develop industry-specific vocabulary; skills and knowledge that will help them find and keep employment in the Warehouse industry.

We have a class coming up from March 29th to May 21st, 2010. The class runs from 9am – 2pm, Monday through Friday. After the in-class instruction there is also a 60 hour work placement to help the students gain experience and learn on the job.

This course offers :

in-class instruction on industry-specific workplace culture & vocabulary, and computer skills
the opportunity to receive WHMIS, First Aid/CPR and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) training and certifications
Canadian work experience through a 60-hour volunteer work experience placement arranged by and supported by a Job Coach
Learning job search and interview skills and develop a cover letter and resume

Successful candidates for this program will be available to attend class every day, be available to participate in the work experience portion of the program, be able to read and write English enough to pass the certifications (CLB of 4+), show commitment to working in the Warehouse industry and want to look for work after the program is complete.

Space for this upcoming course is limited to 10 people. To apply, please make an appointment with the Employment Assessor (352-3521) to register at any time. Assessments for this course will take place February 18 – March 19, 2010. Please see the attached poster for more information.

Well, it's about time that I catch up on HCA blogging. Happy New Year!
HCA programs are back into swing after the holiday break. Thanks to the Candian Progress Club, Scotia McLeod and Bank of America who are providing support to the programs. Also to our Heritage neighbours who have brought in donations from the Wishlist. A heartwarming story...

One of our wonderful community residents used her Christmas bonus to make a contribution; literally bags and boxes of goodies for the children's programs and items to help out with daily office operations were hand delivered to us this past week. Thank you,your support is so appreciated.

Also, to another neighbour who made use of our connection with Canada Helps and made an online charitable contribution. This neighbour is always popping in with a friendly smile and something to help us out--she also helps the environment by using our composting bins located in the Art Park.

Thanks to our corporate neighbours for their assistance in fundraising and awareness campaigns happening in support of the Community. Watch for updates on these events coming soon! "Trek to Tomorrow", "Culture, Heritage & Urban Art" and the "Under the Harvest Moon Community Festival presented by Bank of America."

HCA recognizes the support of the Bank of America in the seasonal adoption of the Art Park for 2010.

The Heritage Handshake program (the HCA version of a Welcome Wagon) is also close to being actualized. Our friends at Bank of America have also assumed title sponsorship of this program --THANK YOu-- and it will be up and running very soon! If you know anyone that has moved into the Heritage neighbourhood, please give the Heritage Community Association office a call and we will deliver welcome greetings from the Association and the Bank of America.

Well, off I go to set up our community signboards that will remind everyone of the Domino's Pizza Fundraiser happening from January 22nd to the 29th. Order the Heritage Special and $5 from every order will come back to the Heritage Community.

What's new...including FYI's from New Dance Horizons

-Believe it or not, HCA is busily planning our Harvest Festival for 2010. It is tentatively scheduled for Saturday September 25, 2010 to be held in conjunction with Culture Days in Saskatchewan. If you would like to become involved by volunteering, hosting a workshop or performing, contact Fran Markewich @ HCA - 757-9952. It is already gearing up to be a wonderful day and evening; Terrence Littletent is scheduled to be our wrap up performer with the closing ceremonies to take place under the light of the harvest moon in the Art Park.
-Scotia McLeod came up with a creative and generous idea for their holiday celebration this year. Having chosen the Heritage Community as the beneficiary of their goodwill, the staff went on a shopping mission for food and gifts, and celebrated into the evening with gift wrapping, munchies and cheer. The hampers will be presented to three Heritage families on Friday, December 18. Additionally, they have donated turkeys to five other families. Thank you isn't enough. To quote one father: "Wow, oh, wow!"
-HCA met with Tessa Kelln, General Manager of New Dance Horizons this week to peruse the possibility of showcasing our Art Park in their annual Secret Gardens Tour, July 16-18, 2010. We sincerely hope that a partnership will work out; but in any event, I/we enthusiastically encourage all to take in their programming:

A tool for both artist and audience, the Blueprint Series is a dance development and literacy project, an encounter in which audience members can witness new works in progress in a low tech, low stress environment. Audience members are invited to engage in a dialogue with the artists about their work. Delve into the dance dialogue and join us in discussions led by Robin Poitras and guest artists.

The series is scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoons starting in January and will feature Saskatchewan artists from dance, theatre, visual art, music and performance fields.

5th Annual Ice and Fire Carnival
Winter Snow Games

Following a year of hibernation, The 5th Annual Ice & Fire Carnival returns in a unique celebration of the Saskatchewan winter with the theme, Winter Snow Games.

Produced by New Dance Horizons in partnership with Great Excursions, The Dunlop Art Gallery, Sâkêwêwak Artists’ Collective and Neutral Ground in conjunction with the City of Regina and the Olympic Torch Relay, the carnival pays homage to a history of playing in snow, while introducing some new ideas and approaches to snow games not yet charted on the world map.

The 5th Annual Ice & Fire Carnival: World Snow Games, features the work of Saskatchewan artists in an exhibition of ephemeral sculpture and games all created of ice and snow, inviting discovery and participation with winter art, sport, stories, games, dance and more!

Regina Car Share Co-operative now has a vehicle...

Hello,

I am writing on behalf of the Regina Car Share Co-operative (RCS) board to inform you that RCS now has a vehicle to offer car-share members. It is a 2008 Kia Rio hatchback... with heated seats! The vehicle is currently parked in an obscure location on Athol Street between 14th and 15th Avenues (2221 Athol St) in the Cathedral neighbourhood. On it is our logo. We want to be able to park this vehicle in a more conspicuous location, both to enhance awareness of RCS and to make accessing the vehicle more convenient to our members, e.g. near a bus stop, or on a main thoroughfare. We have approached the city about acquiring a free parking space in the downtown area. But are still waiting to hear back from them. The board also wanted to approach community associations in the densest parts of the city to and see if any parking spots could be found this way at the various community centres.

We also wanted to let you know that RCS is “fully operational” so that you can, in turn, inform your networks. It would be great if you could let your communities know that we have a car available for their car-sharing pleasure and post this information in and on the various newsletters/bulletin boards. For RCS to be sustainable, the car needs to be in use as much as possible.

To use the vehicle, individuals first must become a member of RCS by paying a fully refundable $500 membership fee (sort, of like a damage deposit) as well as a non-refundable $25 application fee. There is also a single household joint membership option for the cost of $750. With their application, individuals must submit a driver’s abstract (easily obtainable from SGI) as well as a photocopy of their driver’s license. Once they are a member they are free to book the vehicle whenever they want by using our online booking system accessed through our website (http://www.reginacarshare.ca/). The vehicle’s keys are placed in a nearby lockbox accessed with a key code and there is a log book within the vehicle that we ask members to fill out after each use. And, it’s as easy as that.

Now, we’re still in the process of developing an ideal pricing system that is both cost-effective, provides incentive to drive at lower-use times, and assures RCS is able to pay its bills. Currently, the cost is $0.50/kilometre and $5.00/hour, but we are working to build more complexity into the system. Considerations include charging members a mandatory pre-paid amount of $50 that acts as a monthly credit as well as weekend & midnight- 6AM rates. Remember this price includes everything, both gas and maintenance. All members have to do is drive and pay the invoices they get at the end of each month.

As RCS works out most if not all of the kinks, and finalizes both our pricing and billing systems, it would really benefit the organization if, in the interim, you could inform your respective communities of this new and exciting alternative to vehicle ownership and get back to us regarding the possibility of a parking spot. Wonderful is the word of the day...

Our Executive Director, Leila Francis is enjoying a well-deserved holiday this month, and it seems that I have been busy in her absence--or at least that is the excuse I am using for not blogging in the past week.

Our Urban Agriculture Coordinator, Fran Markewich has been working on an Adopt the Park program proposal for tendering to the public to ensure that the strides that were made in the Art Park last summer with the assistance of Bank of America donations and volunteer efforts continue as we look forward to the next season in our Park (aren't we all looking forward to some plus temperatures given the weather the past few days?).

Our Special Events Coordinator, Kierin Gorlitz has been working the telephone lines and even knocking on doors on these cold December days to ensure that sponsorship is secured for the upcoming Trek to Tomorrow fundraising, Heritage awareness event. Too soon to be doing so for a May 1st event? Not so! We want to use those wonderful sponsors that are jumping on board now to entice even more wonderful sponsors to do so! I feel horribly bad that one of our supporters, KoKo Patisserie didn't get their article to us for the most recent edition of Heritage Happenings. The manager Kevin attempted at least twice to send it here, but it is still floating in the twilight zone somewhere! In any event, stop by and pick up some of their wonderful desserts or the delectable bread, all calorie free of course!

And the latest update-Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Regina who invited me to be their guest speaker at their luncheon meeting yesterday. It was an honour to have the opportunity to brag about the Heritage community to such a wonderful group of community minded gentlemen.

In reading over this, it seems "wonderful" is the word of the day! Stay tuned for some wonderful news TBA very soon from the Heritage Community Association...

Around the community...Carmichael Outreach

As the weather is bound to turn colder, please think of Carmichael and pass along any useable winter wear their direction. They will make sure it is given to those in need.

And in the spirit of giving, many fine supporters of the Outreach were out on November 18th for a steak night fundraiser (tis apparently the season for steak nights also, but I like steak) at The Owl,"giving" a grand total of $1000 to the Outreach's coffers. It just so happens that I won the 50/50 pot and I never win anything~smile!

Canadian Progress Club Regina Centre Charity Auction

Last evening, I attended the 22nd annual Charity Auction in support of Camp Circle O' Friends and other children's charities presented by The Canadian Progress Club Regina Centre.
It was another first class event, full of hope and inspiration for attendess, volunteers and those who are affected by cancer. Camp Circle O' Friends holds a camp every June at Hitchcock's Hideaway on the shores of Lake Diefenbaker for children whose lives have been touched by cancer. The men of CPC Regina Centre deserve commendation for their dedication to this and so many deserving causes in our community. Jack Lyons was recognized as the Club's Progressian of the Year. Jack's wife, Judy Lyons, a member of the men's sister club, Regina Assiniboine, has long been a champion volunteer with the Heritage Community. "Our" Creativity & Culture kids absolutely love Judy and rightfully so. She has worked with that program as a volunteer since 2003.
Thank you to my "old friends" Jack, Mauro Montanini, Lyle Rogne, Mike Marsh and everyone in CPC Regina Centre for reminding me of all of the good that can and will be done by working together.

On the weekend, I attended SaskCulture's Gathering "Leadership 101" along with approximately 200 other Saskatchewan residents who work and volunteer for non profits in the province. I took in several workshops including Strategic Thinking facilitated by Vic Huard, Program Evaluation with Corinne Bokitch and the Partnerships session with Flo Frank.

While all of the sessions and networking opportunities were of great value, for me, the greatest takeaway, was the reassurance that the renaming from Core to Heritage was the correct choice by the community. The interim head of Heritage Saskatchewan, which launched its membership recruitment and website (http://www.heritagesask.ca/) at the Gathering, spoke at the luncheon on Saturday:

"Many people think of heritage solely in terms of buildings, but it is our legacy from the past.
Heritage is all of those things that we are custodians of from the past. That includes natural environment, the built environment and our cultural heritage--our stories, our values, our way of living. As stewards and custodians, we have an obligation to pass that on to future generations in a way that they find useful and to use it in the present."
